The Vindice Prison (復讐者(ヴィンディチェ)の牢獄, Vindiche no Rōgoku?) is a penitentiary that is reserved for those who break Mafia law in the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! series. The prison has a reputation for being inescapable; yet, Mukuro Rokudo and a number of other people led by him, and Demon Spade managed this feat. It is managed by the Vindice.

Details[]

The Vindice Water Prison, located in Europe,[1] suspends those contained in the lowest sections of the prison in water, making the contained person completely immobile; as such, their muscle mass deteriorates and it is said that no sound nor light can ever reach those who are imprisoned here.

Vindice Prison is revealed to be provided with security cameras both inside and outside prison cells and alarms that alert the Vindice to escaping prisoners, just like ordinary prisons.[2] Although the prisoners are doomed to live the rest of their lives in this dreadful prison, if their allies can make the right kind of deal, it is possible that their release can be negotiated. Even when confined, certain individuals can still interact with the world outside. Mukuro has shown the ability to use Illusions inside his cell. Demon Spade was able to physically escape when he possessed Mukuro's body.

List of known inmates[]

  • Mukuro Rokudo - Imprisoned due to various crimes against the mafia world including the destruction of two Mafia families. Attempted a break out with his gang but was captured while giving them a chance to escape. In response he was thrown into the lower cells where neither light or sound penetrates. It is worth noting that despite his accommodation he has maintained telepathic contact with others outside the prison. The Kokuyo Gang has since made two attempts to break him out. The second time ten years after his imprisonment they succeeded by impersonating him as another inmate scheduled for release.
  • Ken Joshima - Imprisoned due to the aiding and abetting of felon Mukuro Rokudo and his crimes against the Mafia world. Attempted a break out with the rest of the Gang and was one of two to succeed in escaping.
  • Chikusa Kakimoto - Imprisoned due to the aiding and abetting of felon Mukuro Rokudo and his crimes against the Mafia world. Attempted a break out with the rest of the Gang and was one of two to succeed in escaping.
  • Lancia - He was imprisoned despite that fact that his crimes were because of possession by Mukuro. After his escape Lancia was an example of someone freed from returning to the prison.
  • M.M - She escaped as part of the Kokuyo gang.
  • Birds - An assassin who enjoys others in pain. Birds had undertaken operations for Mukuro.
  • Ghost - Imprisoned due to the deaths of several Mafia members during a test of Ghosts abilities in which several military ships were sunk. Due to his abilities Ghost was placed within the same kind of cell as Mukuro. Ghost has since been released after negotiations with Millefiore leader Byakuran. The details of the arrangement remain unknown.
  • Ryohei Sasagawa - Imprisoned due to the former agreement of Giotto of the Vongola Family and Simon Cozzato of the Simon family. This decrees that during a time of conflict between the two families the losers of a battle of pride would face eternity in the Vindice prison. The rule of his battle which was agreed by both parties was that the first to place even a knee on the ground would lose. As both Ryohei and Kouyou collapsed at the same time the Vindice concluded that both sides had lost their pride and imprisoned both for eternity.
  • Kouyou Aoba - Like Ryohei he joined in his fate at the time since the Vindice concluded that both sides had lost their pride and imprisioned both for eternity.
  • Large Ooyama - Imprisoned due to the former agreement of Giotto of the Vongola family and Simon Cozzato of the Simon family. The rule of the battle which was agreed by both parties was that the first to fall from the stone platform the battle took place on would lose. As Large was pushed from platform the Vindice concluded he had lost his pride and imprisoned him for eternity.
  • Shitt P! - Imprisoned due to the former agreement of Giotto of the Vongola family and Simon Cozzato of the Simon family. The rule of the battle which was agreed by both parties was that the first to have both Fiamma Balloons burst within a five minute limit would lose. If the time ran out both would lose. However both Shitt P!'s balloons burst therefore the Vindice concluded she had lost her pride and imprisoned her for eternity.

Story[]

During the Mist Ring Battle the prison is mentioned by Mammon when he recognizes Mukuro's name as being one who escaped from the Vindice Prison about a month ago. It is also known as an impregnable fortress by Levi A Than. The imprisoned state of Mukuro is seen by Tsuna, as is a vision of him escaping with Ken and Chikusa. The impregnable fortress aspect of the prison is commented on by Mukuro during this time.[3]

In the future, the Vindice Prison is mentioned after it is said that Mukuro has been defeated. Five years ago before then, Ken with Chikasu and Chrome attempted to break Mukuro out of prison yet that ended in failure.[4] When a real illusion of Mukuro prevents Byakuran from capturing Uni after the Choice battle, it is said that if Mukuro wanted to win he would have to escape Vindice Prison. The prison containing his physical body is seen. Tsuna thinks how Mukuro has been in the Vindice prison for ten years.[5]

Byakuran calls Iris to negotiate Ghost's release, where Bluebell with Kikyo and Zakuro pick up on the prison's involvement. At an icy location in Europe, outside the entrance Iris and a pair of guards approach the prison. Kept confined in a similar manner to Mukuro is one of the Six Funeral Wreathes, Ghost.[6] This water based prison is where Iris learns from the Vindice that Mukuro has been released. One of the illusionists able to deceive the Vindice was Fran who had previously been here.[7]

When Belphegor believes the real Mukuro is still imprisoned in a Vindice cell, Fran clarifies he helped his master escape. Tsuna is updated by Ryohei and Gokudera about Mukuro's escape from the prison.[8]

Upon their arrival on the Simon island, the inescapable Vindice prison is mentioned by Adelheid Suzuki. The losing side of the battles to come between the Vongola and Simon families will be imprisoned for eternity.[9] When Large Ooyama feels Lambo has lost in their battle he says he will spend the rest of his life in Vindice's prison.[10] Upon ten-years-later Lambo's arrival, he is also alerted by Tsuna that if he loses he would be imprisoned forever.[11]

With it clear that Demon Spade means to use Chrome Dokuro to possess Mukuro's body as a vessel, Tsuna notes how Mukuro is still in the Vindice prison.[12] Also knowing that, Demon Spade feels Mukuro can use his illusionary powers to assist Chrome from his location there.[13] After Mukuro has defeated Demon Spade he finds his body is still in the Vindice prison but he cannot return to it. The large amount of fluid around Mukuro's body is seen. The restraints and chains are broken as Demon Spade within Mukuro's body breaks out.[14] The tubes and cables are broken and there appears no spell based means of preventing someone of Demon's capabilities from exiting the prison.

The situation in the prison is known about when Mukuro updates Tsuna's group, yet Yamamoto feels Demon will not be able to do anything if he is there. The Vindice report that their prison is in fact being destroyed by Mukuro's berserk body under the control of Demon. The broken confines are mentioned, and the Vindice feels it is only a matter of time until a jailbreak occurs. Those taken to the prison during the Vongola and Simon family conflict would be freed by the Vindice if Demon was defeated.[15] That Demon escaped from the prison could be felt by Mukuro. Brandishing many of the Simon Earth rings, Demon states he got them in the Vindice prison which implies he knew how to access the locations of other prisoners.[16] When Demon escaped from the prison the strength of his flames could be felt by Tsuna.[17]

The state of the interior is not commented on, but the prison did release those taken after Demon was defeated. Accordingly the cells released Adelheid, Kaoru, Shitt.P, Large, Kouyou, and Ryohei.[18] Mukuro claims he swore he would defeat Tsuna after getting out of the prison as he reveals himself and his group as a faction in the Representative Battle of the Rainbow.[19]
