Character Outline

Mukuro Rokudo is one of the main characters of Reborn! and is the first season's primary villain, though he later became the Guardian of Mist.[1]

Portrayed as the series' first primary antagonist, Mukuro Rokudo is introduced as a 15-year-old[2] Mafia criminal wearing Kokuyo school uniform with a so called "pineapple" hairstyle. He is the leader of the Kokuyo Gang, which consists of heinous criminals who have recently escaped from Prison.[3] However, later on in the series, he takes on a more supportive role for the series' main characters, becoming somewhat of an ally rather than an enemy. Although, he prefers to not consider himself as one of their allies and trys to avoid any involvement with Mafia organization.[4]

Profile

History

As revealed in a flashback sequence,[5] Mukuro Rokudo was born into the Estraneo Famiglia and was one of the children experimented on by the Estraneos.[5] One day, Mukuro killed his captors with his Abilities and offered Chikusa Kakimoto and Ken Joshima, two children who were also experimented on, a chance to join him in his new quest to destroy the "insignificant" world.[5]

Later on,[6] Mukuro was adopted into a Mafia Family in Northern Italy. However, unbeknownst to the Family, Mukuro was periodically controlling one of its Members, Lanchia, and using him to kill others, eventually making him kill his own Family. Since then, Mukuro had Lanchia under his complete control,[6] using him as a "Fake Mukuro" who is eventually mistakenly identified as the real Mukuro in a picture, whereas the real Mukuro is said to have never been photographed.[7][6]

What else Mukuro did in recent years remains a mystery, but it is mentioned that he, along with Ken and Chikusa, had been locked up in a high security Italian prison, which is reserved for the most dangerous of Mafia criminals, who have even committed crimes against the Mafia itself.[3] Two weeks prior to the Kokuyo Gang's appearance in the story, they staged a jailbreak on the eve of Mukuro's execution,[8] resulting in the death of several wardens and prisoners, and later the escape of other dangerous criminals, including Lanchia.[3]

Personality

Despite often being shown with a playful smile, Mukuro is seemingly apathetic to the suffering of others. Appearing as the series' first antagonist, Mukuro is not averse to disposing of those who get in his way and is not easily intimidated, usually speaking to others in a very direct and arrogant manner. He cares little for others, and simply considers people to be "toys"[9] or "tools"[2] he can sacrifice in order to get to what he wants.

However, despite claiming that people are just toys, he seems to tolerate both Ken and Chikusa, and even protects them when need be, though he does not directly do so in front of them. He later sacrifices himself in order for Ken and Chikusa to safely escape from the Vendicare, and he also agrees to be the Guardian of the Mist in exchange for the two's safety.[10]

Mukuro, along with Ken and Chikusa, is implied to have a strong dislike for the entire Mafia underground, possibly due in part to the experimentations he suffered as a child. However, not only does he have the desire to destroy the entire Mafia, he also wants to invoke world suffering by starting a world war, claiming to want to cleanse the world with darkness.[11]

Even after becoming the Mist Guardian, Mukuro still claims to no longer be part of the Mafia, having been exiled from it,[3] and continues to view the organization with great contempt, though he now prefers to avoid any involvement with them. Mukuro is also quite knowledgeable of the Mafia's dark secrets, possibly even the secret behind the Arcobaleno,[12][9] a group of the Mafia's most powerful infant hitmen.

Chrome Dokuro

Chrome11

Chrome Dokuro

Mukuro first comes upon Chrome Dokuro, who was known as "Nagi" at the time, while he was taking a stroll through one of his illusions. When Nagi was thinking to herself about how her life will finally end due to an accident which caused her to lose her right eye and most of her organs, Mukuro's voice told her that it will not end. To his surprise, she was able to hear his voice and reply back, which is when he takes her into his Illusion. He tells her that they are alike, and he proceeds to activate his Sixth Realm.

By possessing her body, he is able to create Illusionary organs for her, allowing her to live.[13] Though his essence resides in her body, he chooses to not take full control of her, usually only mentally communicating with her and appearing only when she is in dire situations. When Mukuro takes over her body, he uses a huge amount of energy in order to become a reality.[14] However, this intertwines their existence; for as long as Chrome is alive, Mukuro can exist, and as long as Mukuro exists, Chrome can continue living.[10]

Mukuro is kind and considerate towards Chrome and has shown concern for her many times. At the battle with Glo Xinia, he shudders when Glo Xinia commented of how precious Chrome is to him, and also, after that event, he told Tsuna to not drag her out of his reach and even requested him to protect her. Also, when others bully or harrass "his" Chrome, he will do anything to protect her from them, and he says things like "I'll punish you for scaring Chrome." And unlike to others, he always shows gentle smile to her everytime he communicates with her or when she was around This demonstrates that he does care about her, but it is still is unknown if it is an honest behavior or just an act, as she is still someone that he requires to exist. Also, Future Mukuro called her "An ignorant little girl," during the final battle with Byakuran, but also said that the only people who can understand the meaning of his action and words were Chrome and Tsuna. Mukuro is the only person who knows and calls her by her real name.

Plot Overview

Kokuyo Arc

After creating the Kokuyo Gang, Mukuro kidnapped Fuuta and used his rankings to draw out Vongola 10th. He also defeated Kyoya Hibari by taking advantage of his weakness to Sakura. Later, he revealed his plan to take over Tsuna's body in order to get revenge on the Mafia. After being defeated, he and his gang were arrested by the Vendicare.

Varia Arc

Mist Ring and the Vongola Coat of Arms

A month before the Varia's arrival, Mukuro, Ken and Chikusa attempted a jail break. Mukuro used himself as bait so the others could get away and as a result, was thrown into a lower level jail cell. He later discovered Chrome Dokuro, and he became the Vongola Guardians of Mist in exchange for his comrades' safety. During the Mist Ring Battle, Chrome was defeated by Mammon. Mukuro then appeared briefly and defeated Mammon himself.

Future Arc

Future Mukoro's Reappearence

Future Mukuro

In the Future, Glo Xinia claimed to have defeated Mukuro during a previous battle. However, Mukuro had in fact possesed Glo's Owl Box Weapon and used this to help Chrome defeat Glo Xinia at Healthy Land. He spied on the Millefiore under the guise of Leonardo Lippi, sending infomation of the Millifiore to the Vongola but ends up being injured in a fight against Byakuran who claimed to have always known his true identity. Mukuro planned to leave his body after gathering infomation about Byakuran's power but was stopped by him.

Choice

During the battle that ensured after the Choice match, Mukuro appeared as a real Illusion and was able to slow Byakuran so that he couldn't chase Yuni. He was later rescued from the Vendicare by Ken, Chikusa, and Fran. After that, he used an Illusion to decieve the remaining Funeral Wreaths. Chrome later gave him the Mist Vongola Box Weapon. After Tsuna defeated Byakuran, he was seen with Chikusa and Ken called out Chrome since it almost time to go back to the past.

Relationships

Ken & Chikusa

They were subordinates of Mukuro since childhood. Ken and Chikusa are very loyal to Mukuro, who had saved them when they were younger, and they willingly help him even if it costs them their lives. Mukuro sometimes feel irritated if they start fighting; however he also seems to tolerate both of them as far sacrificing himself to be captured by Venicare and make a deal with Iemitsu to become Tsuna's Guardian of Mist in exchanged for their safety.

Tsunayoshi Sawada

Due to his hatred towards the Mafia, he planned to possess Tsuna's body. Even though he hates Mafia, Mukuro seems to find him interesting due to his personality toward others; although, he also found Tsuna naive. Tsuna used to hate Mukuro for what he had done, but as time passed, he had lost his hatred and now seems to have sympathy for him after knowing his past and his reason to become Tsuna's Guardian of Mist. In the Future, Mukuro had indirectly helped the Vongola by sabotaging one of the Millefiore's computer to transmit infomation about them to the Vongola. Tsuna has often worried that something bad happened to him. Mukuro himself seems to trust him when he asked Tsuna to protect his comrade; although, he thinks that he has started to lose his mind asking favors from the Mafia.

Kyoya Hibari

Mukuro has a rivalry with Hibari, even in the Future, since Mukuro had defeated him during Kokuyo Arc. This event left a great humiliation for Hibari and made him to agree to become the Vongola Cloud Guardian after Reborn promised him that he can fight Mukuro again to make sure to pay him back for his defeat. Mukuro seems to be interested in Hibari's strength as seen when he fights him the second time because Hibari could still move even though Mukuro had broke several of Hibari's bones.

Fran

Fran is Mukuro's disciple in the Future. Due to Fran's antagonistic personality, even though he calls him "Master," Fran often mocks Mukuro (calling him "Pineapple head") much to Mukuro's annoyance which makes him stab Fran in the head several times with his Trident. Mukuro calls Fran his "Little One" or "Useless Discple." He also seems to think of him as a little boy, even though Fran's illusions can trick Vendicare.

Appearances in other media

Besides the manga and anime series, Mukuro has appeared in other Reborn! works. In addition to appearing in all of the series' video games,[15] Mukuro appears in the first light novel, Hidden Bullet: Mukuro's Illusions, found in the Vongola 77 Official Character book, which shows the events of how Mukuro took over Kokuyo High. [16]

Reception

In the second official Shonen Jump poll of the Reborn! series, which was divided into heroes and villains, Mukuro ranked as the number one most popular villain.[17] In the third poll of the series, Mukuro ranked as the third most popular male character, losing to Tsunayoshi Sawada and Kyoya Hibari, who took second and first place, respectively.[18]

On November 7 2007, a character CD entitled "Sakura Addiction", featuring Mukuro and Hibari, was released, and became the most successful Reborn! character CD, debuting in ninth place in the Oricon charts.[19] The single reached its peak at seventh place,[20][21] but remained in the chart's Top 40 till mid-January of 2008.[22] It contains duets and individual songs sung by both voice actors: Toshinobu Iida and Takashi Kondō. There are two available covers; both show one character as the main feature, with the other shown in the background with his back turned.[23][24] The song "Sakura Addiction", which was a duet sung by both voice actors, was used as the fifth ending for the series.

For the second annual Seiyū Awards, Toshinobu Iida and Takashi Kondō each received a nomination for "Best Musical Performance", for their music theme "Sakura Addiction". Toshinobu also received a "Best Rookie Actor" nomination for his portrayal as Mukuro Rokudo.

Abilities and Weapons

Known as someone who has driven both the Mafia and police into the most dangerous and desperate of situations,[8] Mukuro is a formidable and deadly opponent.

Though Mukuro's main Weapon is a Trident, which he always carries with him, he is first and foremost a master of illusions; he can even overpower an Arcobaleno in a battle of its use, albeit Mukuro is also able to use combative skills. Being a skillful user of Illusions, he is not easily deceived by Illusions that are cast by others, possessing a highly perceptive mind.

He acquired his skills by having followed the ways of the "Six Paths of Reincarnation", which has been carved into his memories, possibly due to the experiments he underwent as a child. He claims that his body has gone through all six paths to Hades, granting him six powerful skills.[9]

When using his skills, a Japanese numeral, corresponding to the realm he has entered, appears in his right eye.

First Realm - When the symbol "一", representing the number one in Japanese, appears in his eye, it indicates his use of the first realm, the "Realm of Hell", which grants him the power to create real Illusions, capable of entering the real world. This power is simply reality-warping, with the limitation of, the Illusion must be pre-made before the power enters the real world. Seemingly he can use this ability without having the Illusion to appear in the real world, but only in the mind.[25]

Second Realm - ("二" represents the number two) is the "Realm of Hungry Ghosts", which grants him the power to use the skills of others; when he controls a person's body, he is able to perfectly perform their signature attacks.[26]

Third Realm - ("三" is three) is the "Realm of Animals", which grants him the power to summon and control deadly animals.[25]

Fourth Realm - ("四" is four) is the "Realm of Asura", which increases his hand-to-hand combat skills as a Mist Flame surrounds his right eye.[9]

6th Path

Sixth Realm Realm of Heaven

Fifth Realm - ("五" is five) is the "Realm of Humans", which increases his battle aura, thus his strength; it is considered to be the most dangerous of the Six Realms; when Mukuro first enters the realm, he physically pierces his right eye, and a type of aura, resembling the Dying Will Flame, then surrounds Mukuro's entire body,[27] but unlike the Dying Will Flame, Mukuro's aura, in itself, poses no danger,[11] as it just represents Mukuro's fighting spirit.[27]

Sixth Realm - ("六" is six) is the "Realm of Heaven", which grants him the power to control others.[9]

Possession Shot - Along with his Six Paths of Reincarnation, Mukuro possesses the Estraneo Family's Possession Shot, which was deemed forbidden by the rest of the Mafia. When shot by the bullet, the person shot will be able to possess the body of another person. Its use requires the user to have a strong will and an affinity for the bullet itself.[28]

When shot with the bullet, Mukuro is able to possess and control the body of anyone that he has cut with his Trident. He can possess several bodies simultaneously, and he is also still able to enter the Six Realms, granting him the ability to use a different skill for each body.[28]

Trident - During the Kokuyo Arc, Mukuro used his Trident to create a "pact" between whomever he wished to use the his Second Realm on when he was under the influence of the Possession Shot. When the blade was broken, it was replaced with a regular one. However, Glo Xinia remembers a moment when Mukuro stabbed his Rain Owl in the wing, giving him the Ability to possess it which means he has that Trident somehow.

Gufo della Pioggia lit. Rain Owl/Gufo della Foschia lit. Mist Owl - Nicknamed Mukuro. Mukuro has been hiding out in this Box Weapon, presumably spying on Glo Xinia whilst waiting for a chance to defeat him.

Mukuro's Hell Rings

Mukuro's Hell Rings

Vongola Mist Owl This is Mukuro's Vongola Box Weapon after receiving it from Chrome in the final battle in the Future arc. It appears to look much like her Mist Owl but with armour padding on it's wings. Cambio Forma: Demon Spade's Evil Lens The Vongola Mist Owl transforms into a set of three Lens. These Lens enable Mukuro to scan a target and see its identity and weakness. It was also said that the First Mist Guardian had the same Weapon and could curse anyone he glared at.

Hell Rings - Mukuro has two Hell Rings. One is a Vine Covered Orb Shaped Ring. The other one is the Eye Shaped Ring. He can use the Eye Shaped Ring to generate a blast of Mist Flames in the form of eyes and tentacles.
