Character Outline

Kyoya Hibari is the leader of the Discipline Committee of Prefects, who all are delinquents loyal to Hibari. Like his subordinates, he too is a violent delinquent who uses his status to harass other students. However, he prefers to be alone and cares little for his subordinates. Hibari is very proud of his school, and is apparently the only person who likes their school's anthem, even using it as his ring tone. In the Kokuyo Arc, he adopted one of the Kokuyo assassin Birds' bird . The bird (subsequently nicknamed "Hibird" due to its connection to Hibari) becomes attached to Hibari. Reborn piqued Hibari's curiosity early on in the series, and Hibari considers him a worthy opponent, having a strong urge to fight him. His catchphrase is "I'll bite you to death" (kamikorosu), which he often says before a fight. He also has a weakness to sakura/cherry blossoms, due to Dr. Shamal transferring an incurable disease to him earlier in the manga. But later, during the Kokuyo Arc, he was given the antidote from Gokudera before Tsuna and Mukuro faced off for the last battle of that Arc.

Plot Overview

Kokuyo Arc

Due to the beatings done on students of Namimori Junior High, Hibari went to beat up the one responsible, and managed to defeat the students who he encountered on his way. He was later miserbly defeated by Mukuro, who took advantage of his Sakura-kura disease given to him by Shamal. He was later imprisoned within Kokuyo Land and during that time did he meet with one of Bird's birds, teaching it how to sing his school's song. He was later freed by Gokudera and given a cure for the disease. Hibari then carried Gokudera to where Mukuro and Tsuna were and began another fight. Because Mukuro did not know that he was cured of the disease, Hibari managed to attack him off guard and knocked him out. Only later to fall unconscious due to his injuries. After Tsuna's victory, he was taken to a hospital.

Cloud Ring and the Vongola Coat of Arms

Hibari was made the Vongola Cloud Guardian but refused to be taught by Dino unless he could beat him in battle. They fought in multiple environments to increase Hibari's experience. During the Cloud Ring Battle he battled Gola Mosca for the ring and appears to defeat it. He then attempts to battle with Xanxus. However Gola Mosca once again become active and continued the rampage. During the Sky Ring Battle he manages to resist the Death Heater venom but was injured by Bel. He left the battle after rescuing Gokudera and Yamamoto.

Future Arc

In the future, Hibari saved Hayato and Takeshi and defeated Gamma . After their reunion, he agreed to train Tsuna. Hibari had previously been searching for information concerning box weapons by starting The Foundation. Hibari later defended the hideout against the Millefiore raid. After this he infiltrated the Melone Base and fought Genkishi. As Genkishi was about to land a finishing blow, Hibari was replaced by his younger self. Hibari was able to separate the group from Genkishi when his hedgehog box weapon went into shock and expanded at great speed. Later it was revealed that Irie Shoichi, future Tsuna, and Future Hibari planned together secretly to fight against the Millefore Family and that was the reason he knew about the raid. After the choice battle, his Vongola box prevented the Six Funeral Wreaths from running after the Vongola. Later with Dino he faced off against Daisy. Daisy then opened his Hell hole and beat Dino. However Hibari was able to defeat Daisy with his Vongola box and confiscated his ring. He later arrived to help the Vongola fight the remaining Funeral Wreaths.

Abilities & Weapons

Hibari is a fierce and well trained fighter who has an almost insatiable bloodlust for a worthy opponent. As his main weapon, he uses a pair of tonfa. Hibari's tonfa have also been shown to have hidden compartments containing other weapons and is said to be the strongest Vongola Guardian.

In the future, Hibari has become adept at using rings. His flame has become so intense that even without the Cloud Vongola ring, he is capable of great feats of strength. However, he shatters normal rings when he uses them. The younger Hibari is also capable of emitting a massive Dying Will flame with the Vongola Ring, engulfing even his entire body. This was said to emerge when Hibari was feeling angry with others for disrupting him. It is revealed that Dino taught him how to emit the flames. Hibari has been shown to have more knowledge than most concerning the boxes and uses them at a high proficiency.

  • Cloud Tonfas - Appears as regular tonfas covered in Cloud Flames.
  • Cloud Hedgehog - When used, a hedgehog is shot towards the target. Due to the Cloud's ability, propagation, the hedgehog can become bigger when it takes in Dying Will Flames.
  • Needle Sphere Form - His hedgehog forms a huge airtight sphere that encloses his target. The target is then suffocated.
  • Needle Sphere Form, Reversed - He creates a big airtight space where only people are allowed inside. Use of Box Weapons are restricted but Rings and Dying Will Flames are allowed, leaving Hibari and his opponent to a direct fight.

Hibari and his Vongola Box Weapon

  • Vongola Cloud Hedgehog - This hedgehog can also absorb flames to create copies of itself.
  • Cambio Forma: Alaude's Handcuffs: - Hibari's Cambio Forma takes the form of a pair of handcuffs with spikes on one end. At first seeming useless, it is revealed that Hibari can multiply it using the the Cloud attribute's ability Propagation by absorbing his enemy's flames or using his own. This ability of propagation is so swift that Daisy dismissed it as 'a cool magic trick'. These cuffs can also increase in size and envelope the enemy in a cocoon of cuffs and as a finishing move, Hibari can shrink the cuffs, crushing his opponent.

Character Reception

On November 7 2007, a character CD entitled "Sakura Addiction", featuring Mukuro and Hibari, was released, and became the most successful Reborn! character CD, debuting in ninth place in the Oricon charts. The single reached its peak at seventh place, but remained in the chart's Top 40 till mid-January of 2008. It contains duets and individual songs sung by both voice actors: Toshinobu Iida and Takashi Kondō. There are two available covers; both show one character as the main feature, with the other shown in the background with his back turned. The song "Sakura Addiction", which was a duet sung by both voice actors, was used as the fifth ending theme for the series.

For the second annual Seiyū Awards, Toshinobu Iida and Takashi Kondō each received a nomination for "Best Musical Performance", for their music theme "Sakura Addiction".

Trivia

  • He is often referred to as 18 in the Reborn! fandom as '1' in the old Japanese counting system is 'hi' and '8' from the same system can be pronounced as 'ba' hence, Hiba(ri).
  • His last name, 'Hibari', can be translated into skylark, a type of bird. As such, Hibari is shown to have an affinity for birds in the series.
  • In a recent popularity poll, Hibari ranked second, with 14,017 votes.
  • In the annual internet survey by Japanese music distributor Recochoku, "The Character I Want to Be My Groom" he ranked #1 two times.
  • At Melone Base, it is revealed he light's his flame through irritation. While for everyone else it is resolve that measures one's ring power, it is speculated that Dino thought Hibari's Irritation and Resolve were one in the same.
  • According to Futa's ranking, he is the strongest student in Namimori.
  • When I-Pin gave Hibari chocolates during Valentine's day, he seemed amused.
  • Hibari resembles and acts like the first Vongola Cloud Guardian.
  • The future Hibari hates illusionists. This shows that Hibari continues to have a rivalry with Mukuro. Ironically, illusionists use Mist flames, which Kusakabe notes that Hibari is capable of using, as seen when he dispelled the concealment around his hideout.
  • Hibari is one of the quickest one to open his Box Weapon.
  • Even though he is still in middle school, Hibari apparently owns and rides a motorcycle.
