This article is a stub. More information should be added whenever possible.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (家庭教師ヒットマンREBORN!), also known as Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn! or REBORN! (official US title), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akira Amano. The series was first serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump[1] on May 31, 2004 in Japan, where it ended on November 12, 2012.[2][3] Its 409 chapters now make up 42 physical manga volumes.

An anime adaptation of the original manga by the studio Artland released from October 2006 to September 2010. The adaptation aired its 203 episodes on the private broadcaster TV Tokyo.[4]

The series was published and licensed by Viz Media for North America and the United Kingdom, in which the first sixteen volumes were published with an official English translation from October 2006 to July 2010.[5] Official English subtitles for the anime TV series were made available through the anime streaming service Crunchyroll in March 2009 and Viz Media in 2011.[6][7]

The plot of the series centers around a teenage boy named Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, known for being a "no-good" loser. The story follows him after he meets an infant hitman known as Reborn, who acts as his home (hitman) tutor to train him to become the Tenth Boss of a powerful Mafia Famiglia known as the Vongola Famiglia.

Characters[]

The main protagonist of the series is Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, as he's trained by his mentor and deuteragonist, Reborn. He's joined by a recurring cast of characters from his school and daily life, and each arc reveals new recurring characters within the mafia world.

The main cast consists of Tsunayoshi Sawada's inner circle, the Vongola Guardians - Hayato Gokudera, Takeshi Yamamoto, Ryohei Sasagawa, Lambo, Kyoya Hibari, Mukuro Rokudo and Chrome Dokuro. As the series progresses, he is joined by allies and foes alike, most notably characters belonging to the Cavallone Familglia, the Kokuyo Gang, the Varia, the Millefiore Famiglia, the Arcobaleno, the CEDEF, and the Simone Famiglia.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! has the running motif of Tsuna's past enemies becoming his allies and major supporting characters in following arcs.

Manga[]

The series first started as Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, a one-shot manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2004. Due to the success of the one-shot, Amano started working on the manga, which officially began its serialization on May 2004. The weekly releases officially ended on the release of the 409th chapter in November 2012.[3][2]

The series volumes began its publication on October 2004, and ended on March 2013. Following the announcement of the anime adaptation, the English releases started its publication on the second anniversary of the series. It ended only on the publication of the 18th volume on January 2011.[1]

On October 2017, Shueisha announced the re-print of the Japanese volumes with new cover art.[8] Two volumes will be combined into one publication, making 21 re-printed volumes. The re-printed volumes started its release on November 17, 2017. Two re-printed volumes were released on every publication until the 21st volume's release on September 18, 2018.

An anime adaptation of the manga started airing on October 7, 2006 and ended on September 25, 2010. The series was broadcasted on TV Tokyo with 203 episodes, and was produced by the Japanese animation studio Artland with the direction of Kenichi Imaizumi.[4] The DVD volumes in Japan were distributed by Marvelous Entertainment.

The anime adaptation mostly follows the story of the manga series. Some changes were made to the story, such as censoring out mature themes such as cigarettes and the use of blood. The Inheritance Ceremony Arc and The Curse of the Rainbow Arc were never adapted into the anime. Instead, the anime created two new filler arcs, the Arcobaleno Trials Arc and the Primo Family Arc, which both took place during the Future Arc, and revolved around Tsuna and his friends temporarily returning back to the present.

While production for the series had already came to an end in 2010, six years later, in 2016, a short was shown at the Akira Amano Illustrations Exhibition known as REBORN X ēlDLIVE 24H. The short had animated scenes from Amano's art book, Rebo to Dlive.

The anime can be viewed on Pluto, Tubi, Peacock, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.

Merchandise[]

Since the series' induction, various merchandise has been sold in Japan and abroad. As of 2025, new merchandise is still launched long after the animation and manga's completion.

Some notable examples:

  • The Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Character Card Game was a series of trading cards featuring the animation's character models, starting in 2007.[9]
  • There are regular Reborn! café collaborations and pop-ups in Japan that feature new official art of popular characters in the animation's style. The Japanese manufacturer AMNIBUS frequently releases merchandise of this nature. These merchandise releases usually include buttons, acrylic standees, coasters, and pins of the original art.
  • In 2023, the popular figure merchant Good Smile Company released official figures of Tsunayoshi Sawada and Kyoya Hibari as part of their POP UP PARADE collection.
  • In 2018 and 2020, Good Smile Company also produced figures of Tsunayoshi Sawada, Kyoya Hibari, Mukuro Rokudo, Xanxus, and Superbia Squalo as part of their Nendoroid collection.
  • In late 2023, the toy company Bandai released the Special Memorize Vongola Box and Vongola Ring sets. The toy sets included a gimmick where the rings could "open" the box, which would play an audio recording of character voice lines from the animation. After the success of the initial release, Bandai produced two Varia Box and Varia Ring variants for the Special Memorize collection. While merchandise of the Vongola Rings (and other rings from the series) is common, this release was particularly impactful due to the well-known manufacturer, publicity, and recency.

Video games[]

The series has been adapted into several video games, both independently and within games featuring Weekly Shonen Jump characters. Due to the release period of the manga serialization and animation, Katekyo HItman Reborn! video games were largely only released on the PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo Wii.

Some notable examples:

Video game entries for the series are overwhelmingly battle-type games where fan-favorite characters and their combat styles are playable. Many of these games include non-canon or semi-canon information that cannot be confirmed.

Music[]

The music, and particularly the original soundtrack (OST) of the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! animation, is often regarded as a key point in the series' popularity. A product of its time, several albums of original "character songs" were also produced alongside the animation. There are eight opening themes and sixteen ending themes throughout the animation's run, accompanied by the backing soundtrack of the show itself.

Some notable examples:

  • The Japanese rock band LM.C provides two of the iconic opening themes, 88 and BOYS&GIRLS.
  • The Japanese rock band SPLAY provides the first opening, Drawing Days, the original composition for the famous Sakura Addiction ending theme. and the ending theme Echo Again.
  • The aforementioned Sakura Addiction ending theme was sung by Takashi Kondo and Toshinobu Iida, the voice actors for Kyoya Hibari and Mukuro Rokudo, in the aired show. This version was highly successful, with Sakura Addiction peaking at seventh on Oricon charts in late 2007.
  • Japanese composer Toshihiko Sahashi composed the backing soundtrack, with popular symphonic compositions such as Tsuna Awakens and Fuuki Iinchou (Kyoya Hibari's Theme, lit. "Disciplinary Committee president").
  • Original songs, and in extension, entire albums in which Katekyo Hitman Reborn! characters "sang," were produced from 2007 to 2010. There are 24 collections of character songs. During the show's run, the voice actors performed the songs at a series of live concerts, officially named 家庭教師ヒットマンREBORN!ボンゴレ最強のカルネヴァーレ (lit. Katekyo Hitman REBORN ! The Carnival of the Vongola's Strongest) but colloquially called REBOCON.
