Hayato Gokudera, commonly referred to as Gokudera, is one of the main characters of the Katekyo Hitman Reborn! series namely the manga and anime adaption. He is a rebellious and hot-headed delinquent who travels to Japan to locate Tsunayoshi Sawada having heard he was to be the next head of the mafia. Along with Takeshi Yamamoto, he would become a close friend of Tsuna's and partake in activities together.

Raised in the Mafia world and familiar with Reborn, he is the younger half-brother of Bianchi. Skilled with using dynamite, Gokudera is sure to make use of this tremendously beneficial asset in combat. His battling capabilities would be enhanced further on acquiring box weapons, namely his Flame Arrow. A rocket launcher like weapon, Gokuedera could rely on that among other resources. While exceptionally smart, Gokudera also has an interest in the supernatural creatures.

Gokudera becomes the tenth generation Storm Guardian of the Vongola Famiglia. Due to his temperament, he has difficulty in getting along with others who are not Tsuna, namely the captain of the boxing club Ryohei Sasagawa, and Haru Miura, then particularly Lambo. Given time, he is calmer as with Kyoko Sasagawa and I-Pin. From various characters Gokudera engages with, he is ever immensely loyal to Tsuna and seeks to become his right hand man.

Appearance[]

He is a half-Italian and half-Japanese teenage boy of average height. A distinguishing feature is his mid-length silver hair that he has parted in the middle to leave his face fully visible. His hairstyle is often ridiculed by Ryohei Sasagawa for resembling an octopus. It is mentioned by Shamal that Gokudera's hairstyle is a copy of his own.[5] Gokudera also resembles the first generation Storm Guardian, G. He often wears glasses and ties the back of his hair in a ponytail when he is thinking. Another notable feature of his include his narrow green eyes. His traits in appearance are inherited from his late mother, Lavina.

For clothing, Gokudera's most recurring outfit is his Namimori Middle School uniform. He wears a black blazer, white formal shirt, blue tie, and gray pants. His attire is almost always accompanied by various types of accessories, such as wristbands and distinct belts. Gokudera also wears silver accessories to detect poison from Bianchi's cooking.[6]

Personality[]

Gokudera losing his temper.

Hot-tempered, Gokudera tends to be irritable towards anyone who isn't Tsuna, indeed Reborn, and Nana Sawada are some of the few he can engage respectfully with. Those who are the biggest nuisances towards him are his own fellow Guardians. Gokudera has stated he thinks anyone who is older than him is an enemy.[7] When his temper reaches its peak, Gokuedera tends to beat up those who irritate him regardless of age. He cultivates the image of a "bad boy" by having a hostile attitude, dressing like a delinquent, and even attempting to assail others were it not for the intrusions from Tsuna and Takeshi Yamamoto.

Despite his image as a school delinquent, Gokudera is shown to be quite intelligent and finds many of the tests and schoolwork to be easy, unlike who he addresses as his boss. Capable of scoring full marks on his tests, Gokudera can also answer challenging questions that other students were not familiar with. He is rather superstitious and believes in U.M.A.s. He is a big fan of the supernatural and extraterrestrial; his favorite magazine is "The Wonders and Mysteries of the World".[8] Taking such matters seriously, Gokudera appeared greatly alarmed at Dino's turtle Enzo which he regarded as a mountain god to pacify.

Gokudera takes his duties towards acting as the right-hand man of Tsuna very seriously. It gets to the point where he strongly dislikes whenever others interact with Tsuna in any way, especially when that someone was Yamamoto, who he considers a one-sided rival. However, after Yamamoto reprimands him for this, Gokudera realized how irresponsible he was and since then began to warm up to his other friends, though he is too embarrassed to admit it openly. Regardless, Gokudera is willing and able to adjust his conduct, helpful for himself and those who also care about him.

In battle Gokudera has a very methodical and calculated approach to gaining victory. Launching volleys of dynamite is notably effective by its very nature, and it not an advantage that Gokederua fails to utilize. Leading others away, so that they draw close to planted dynamite, to setting traps, Gokudera is resourceful and displays how his intelligence can make a great weapon even greater, more so when it it smartly used.

Gokudera's Flames

Noted as a powerful mid-range fighter, Gokudera is proficient at using dynamites to fight battles. His skills are all the more beneficial in enclosed spaces where he can place traps. In a pinch, Gokudera is willing to used smaller explosives on his back to give himself a thrust when he is about to be hit by something he cannot dodge by his own speed. In being able to endure that, Gokudera can have the explosions propel himself forward where he can close to distance to his target to punch at them.

Smaller dynamites are also used simultaneously with larger ones to create an optical illusion where the smaller dynamites being closer to the opponent to seem just as big as the other ones. In having a foe see them as the same size, where they target one set, they allow to other set to reach them and explode. During the Kokuyo Arc, Gokudera is ranked in third place for the strongest students at Namimori Middle School by Futa, a testament to his strength given all others there.

Additionally a very intelligent fighter, Gokudera naturally creates and enacts complex plans in order to defeat stronger opponents. An example of his intellect is seen when he technically defeats Belphegor (who joined the Varia at the age of 8 and was considered a genius), and is seen later again when he figures out how to use his Flame Arrow after only two attempts. Gokudera is able to complete the Sistema C.A.I. that his future counterpart had been developing, and use the technology to bolster his own battling prowess, defend himself and others, also move efficiently across a battlefield. Gokudera is the first guardian to learn how to ride his motorcycle with some proficiency.

Gokudera is also talented at playing the piano, having done multiple performances when he lived in Italy as a boy. He owns a piano in his apartment.[9]

  • Dynamite: Gokudera is very proficient in the use of dynamite as a weapon which has given him the name of "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" in the manga and "Hurricane Bomb Hayato" in the anime. He always carries huge amounts of dynamite on him at all times. Gokudera has gone on to develop multiple techniques that fully capitalize on bombarding opponents with multiple explosives (the more the better), redirecting his projectiles to improve its accuracy and speed, and sneaking bombs pass the enemy defenses.
  • Flame Arrow: The carrier Box Weapon that is used to project & deliver the Sistema C.A.I.'s various ammunition cargo. This asset is a mid-long ranged shooting cannon fixed onto Gokudera's arm which resembles an open mouth skull acting as the cannon barrel. Another skull mounted at its rear coupled with an ammo slot modeled to its side is used for loading/launching differently preferred bolt types. These may be actual bullets, storm & other dying will flames or even his own dynamite making up its dispensed payload.
  • Sistema C.A.I. (lit. System Change Arms Instantaneous or Instantaneous Arms Change System in Italian): A system of Box Weapons that utilize the five different Flames that flow within his body.
  • Skull Rings:These four skull-shaped Rings are core components of the Sistema C.A.I. They are Rain, Lightning, Cloud and Sun Rings.
  • Gatto Tempesta: Gokudera's Box Weapon is a storm cat named Uri and also a part of Sistema C.A.I. It is capable of becoming a Pantera Tempesta by absorbing Sun Flames. When updated to its Vongola Box Form, Uri is now capable of Cambio Forma that can change into the shape of an archery-style weapon. When released from the Gokudera's Storm Buckle, Uri gains armor on its legs and is wearing sunglasses. This is capable of merging directly with Gokudera for his Cambio Forma.
G's Archery

G's Archery

  • Cambio Forma: G's Archery - When activated, Uri combines with the Flame Arrow to create a giant ornate bow made of bones with Storm Flames covering the drawstring. The Roman Numeral I on the front symbolizes the connection to the 1st Generation of the family. In its Version X form the Cambio Forma has now become many straps of dynamite while forming armor on Gokudera's legs and one of his arms, sunglasses, and a Piped-Shaped Igniter to ignite his dynamite.
  • Motorcycle/Airbike: This vehicle can be used to travel great distances without the use of Dying Will Flames, thus escaping detection from those who can sense them.
  • Buckle of the Storm Version X: The upgrade of the Vongola ring which is combined with Uri.

Trivia[]

  • In the manga, Gokudera chain-smokes cigarettes; however, in the anime, he doesn't smoke, leaving the method to which he lights his Dynamite unknown, which Tsuna even comments on.
