Giotto (ジョット, Jotto) is the founder of the Vongola Famiglia; thus, its first Boss. He is also the creator of the Zero Point Breakthrough technique. After his retirement, he moved to Japan and started a family. He is the paternal great-great-great grandfather of Tsuna, who has repeatedly been shown to be similar to him, as they have the same weapon and techniques (including the Zero Point Breakthrough), almost identical appearances, and equally unorthodox Famiglias (the First Famiglia included aristocrats, military men, rival mafiosos and religious people). Their Guardians are quite similar as well: Yamamoto, Hibari, Mukuro, Lambo, Gokudera, and Ryohei have already been shown to be very much like their first predecessors in appearance, weapon of choice, and personality.

Giotto, later voluntarily renamed Ieyasu Sawada, is the founder and first boss of the Vongola Famiglia, giving him the title of Vongola Primo. He is the progenitor of the Blood of Vongola, and the direct ancestor of Iemitsu Sawada and Tsunayoshi Sawada. He is also the creator of the Zero Point Breakthrough. Giotto's will and spirit currently resides in the Sky Vongola Ring, in the same way as the souls of the other seven Vongola Bosses who have already passed away.

Appearance
+
Appearance
Giotto looks very similar to Tsuna, though they have different hair colours. He has spiky golden blond hair and his eyes are a sharp orange tone, the same as Tsuna's when the latter is in Hyper Dying Will Mode. When not in Hyper Dying Will Mode, his irises are a lighter shade of orange. He wears a black suit with white pinstripes and a white undershirt with a black tie. He also wears a long cloak with a golden, decorated attachment, which later becomes Natsu's Cambio Forma. Throughout his appearances in the anime, he has always been shown in Hyper Dying Will Mode.
+
Giotto is a young man of average height with spiky blond hair and sharp orange eyes. With this, Giotto bears a resemblance to his descendant, Tsuna. He wears a black pinstripe suit, white undershirt, and black tie. His cloak is black with an upturned collar, red tassels, and cloak clasps with intricate designs. Giotto also wears his I-Gloves. In most of his appearances, he remains in Hyper Dying Will Mode.

Personality
+
Personality
He is shown to be a calm and collected leader that cares for his friends and Famiglia and is willing to protect them from harm. He has a strong sense of justice and actively pursues what he believes is right for the people, which is why he formed the Vongola Famiglia. He is similar to Tsuna in many aspects, especially their soft nature that Daemon once had commented on. Likewise, Reborn has once stated that Vongola Primo was the kind of person who accepted anyone into the Famiglia, regardless of background. He is shown to highly value friendship and other bonds that he has with people he knows, and wish for their bonds to be always remembered. He is also a forgiving person that never holds any grudges; when Daemon betrayed him, Giotto still considered him as one of his Guardians. Also, Giotto seems to share Tsuna's belief that a person not willing to die protecting his friends, does not deserve to be a Vongola boss.
+
A calm and collected leader, Giotto also has a strong sense of justice. He actively pursues what he believes is right for the people of his hometown. Despite Vongola rising to power more than it originally was, Giotto never let the power to get into his head. He was always prioritizing the safety of the weak people over ruling them, staying true to his conviction to the very end.

  +
Giotto deeply cares for his friends and Famiglia and is willing to protect them from harm. He likes the safety and smiles of local citizens, Cozzato and his Family, while Giotto dislikes when the weak ones got hurt. Very charismatic, Giotto is able to attract and welcome many kinds of people into his vigilante group. In addition to his charisma, Reborn once stated that Vongola Primo was the kind of person who accepted anyone into the Famiglia, regardless of background.
History
  +
Giotto values friendship and other bonds that he has with people he knows, and wishes for their bonds to be always remembered. He is also a forgiving person that never holds any grudges. After Demon Spade betrayed him, Giotto still considered him as one of his Guardians and continued to believe in the bond they shared together.
Meeting Cozarto & Creation of Vongola
Prior finding the Vongola, Giotto and G met the first Simon Famiglia Boss, Cozarto Simon when Giotto returned his wallet that he purposely dropped with intentions of helping their poor neighbor, Paolo. When both realized they had done the same thing, they introduced themselves and started becoming friends since then. One day, one of their friends, Franco, was attacked by some thugs after he refused to give 90% discount and the doctors were threatened to not help him. Sickened by this incident, Cozarto suggested to create a vigilante group with Giotto as the leader in order to protect the town and its people from the outlaws, and thus, creating Vongola Famiglia; however, not as a part of Mafia Famiglia the way they are now, but as an independent group to protect people. It was presumed that during these times, Giotto received set of seven Vongola Rings from the first Giglio Nero Boss, Sepira.

  +
Tsuna was noted to be similar to Giotto in many aspects, especially his soft nature. He also shares Tsuna's belief that a person who is not willing to die protecting his friends, does not deserve to be a Vongola boss. In this sense, Giotto resembles Tsuna not only in appearance but also in personality.
At some point during his reign as the Vongola Primo, he feared that the Vongola would start to fight for self-interest and decided to disband his military forces, which caused Vongola's territory to be open to an attack. As a result, a duke's daughter and one of their members, Elena, was killed. This event led Giotto to be betrayed by his own Mist Guardian, Daemon Spade, who wanted the Vongola to be more than they were at that point in order to fulfill his promise to Elena, his lover at the time.

Giotto was a very powerful fighter and known to be the strongest Vongola Boss throughout history. He is the only known Vongola Boss to possess the ability to seal away one's Hyper Intuition.cite Giotto is normally seen in Hyper Dying Will Mode. He has fast reflexes and is able to utilize the Vongola Hyper Intuition to dodge a bullet.cite
During a huge war with a rival Famiglia, Knuckle informed that Cozarto and his Famiglia are cornered within the enemy's territory and was about to save them, but stopped by Daemon who volunteered to help them instead. Giotto, realizing Daemon's true plan, ordered G. and the rest of his Guardians to secretly save Cozarto and his Famiglia. Afterwards, he, Cozarto, and G. met up and discussed what they should do with Daemon. Cozarto suggested to keep their survival a secret and then he and his Famiglia would go into hiding, disappear from the world's eyes. Giotto was upset by Cozarto's suggestion and immediately rejected the idea, not wanting them to carry the burden of his Famiglia. However, realizing Cozarto wouldn't back down, Giotto finally agreed under condition that the Simon would always help Vongola as long as the Famiglia exists. Hearing the vow, Bermuda von Veckenschtein and Jager appeared in front of them and declared they will imprison those who lose the battles if Vongola and Simon ever crossed swords against each other. Giotto and Cozarto agreed on the condition that after each battle, they must show their successors their true history. After this, Giotto and Cozarto never met again for the rest of their lifetimes, but believed that one day their true descendants who are bearing their wills will meet each other and smile together like them once again.

Sometime afterwards, Daemon finally directly betrayed him, deeming him unworthy to become a Boss of the current Vongola since the Famiglia Giotto had created had become stronger than he could have ever imagined, stating that he merely accelerated the process. After the betrayal, Giotto sealed the true power of the Original Vongola Rings, as he didn't trust what the Vongola would become. Also wanting to distribute his power in order to restrict the selection of the next Vongola later on, he sealed the highest output of the Rings' flame energies so it could be split into two; one for the Vongola Boss, and for the External Advisor, creating CEDEF with Alaude as the founder and leader, while choosing Ricardo as the next boss. Once Ricardo became the Vongola Secondo, Giotto officially retired and moved to Japan, starting his own family which began with his son Yoshimune. Through Yoshimune, the Japanese part of his bloodline has extended with Yoshinobu, Ietsuna, Iemitsu and finally Tsunayoshi. <br />

Plot Overview
Future Arc
During Tsuna's training with Hibari, he was trapped, enclosed by Hibari's Cloud Hedgehog, and forced Tsuna to undergo the Vongola Trial of Succession. While Tsuna was trapped in the hedgehog, his Vongola Ring emitted images to his head. The previous Vongola Bosses stated that they were the past sins and crimes of the Vongola. The bosses demanded Tsuna to accept the bloody history of the Vongola if he wanted to be strong, but Tsuna refused to do so and stated that he would rather destroy the Vongola than accept their sins. Vongola Primo then accepts Tsuna as the successor to the Vongola and grants him the proof of the Vongola.

* Zero Point Breakthrough: First Edition: A technique using negative compressed energy to seal away Dying Will Flames. This technique is created by Giotto, and later used by Vongola Nono and Tsuna.

Giotto appearing through Tsuna's Vongola Ring, answering Yuni's will.]]He appeared through Tsuna's Vongola Ring and Arcobaleno Pacifier, answering Yuni's will. He stated that he never answered to the Arcobaleno's power and never will again, but is making a single exception due to Yuni's condition; it is never revealed what Yuni promised him. He told Tsuna and the others they have yet to inherit the Vongola's true power and that the First Vongola Guardians will observe them to see if they are worthy to inherit Vongola's true power or not. Before he disappeared, he asked if they were able to embody the duty of a Guardian and if they had that resolve because everything rested on that.

Lightning Guardian Succession Trial
  +
In the Drama CD: Proof of Friendship, which focuses on Giotto and his Guardians' daily life activities, he makes an appearance along with his Guardians. In this story, Giotto had planned and arranged a secret dinner together with his Guardians and went to the town to finish the preparation until night with G, Ugetsu, Knuckle, and Lampow secretly following him out of curiosity and worry.

Later, he appeared at a castle inside an amusement park where Lampo decides that he will stay until his Succession Trial finishes. Giotto said that it was his turn now. At first, Lampo was against doing this, but Giotto was able to convince him as Lampo also commented that he "can't say no to him."

While he visited Talbot's crafting shop, his Guardians mistook him for being threatened because of the silhouette of a paper knife and abruptly approached the shop, only to end up bumping into each other. After they had cleared up their misunderstanding, Giotto took them to the restaurant that he had prepared for the dinner once Demon and Alaudi arrived. At the restaurant, he gave them the golden pocket watches that were made by Talbot under his request as proof of their friendship. All of them had a toast up which they are toasting for the Famiglia as well as celebrating their eternal friendship.
Storm Guardian Succession Trial
During Gokudera's Succession Trial, he sealed Tsuna's Hyper Intuition to prevent him from finding out G's identity who was disguising as Gokudera, but later realized it was pointless to seal it because Tsuna could still felt that G. wasn't the Gokudera that he knows. After G.'s trial, he said that Tsuna realized that G. wasn't his real Storm Guardian even though he already sealed his Hyper Intuition and thanks G. for his help when they remembered the times when they first built the Vongola, something that both he and G. never regretted.

He appears again at the Namimori Shrine along with his Guardians, looking a bit worried as the next trial would be Daemon Spade's one. He checked his pocket watch before standing up. He again along with the other Guardians watch Daemon's trial from afar. The other guardians wanted to intervene, but Giotto just told them to wait and watch, stating that this will be the perfect time for them to determine the true mettle of Tenth Generation Vongola Family. A few moments after the start of the trial, G. once again questioned was it really all right to let Daemon do as he pleases. Giotto remembered the time when Daemon betrayed him and despite being told by G. and Knuckle that what happened before wasn't his fault since Daemon had already chosen different path from the start, Giotto states that the fact Daemon is his Guardian doesn't change, wondering that Daemon's time may have stopped at that time like their pocket watches does.

  +
* Giotto's silhouette was briefly shown in the Kokuyo Arc during the battle of Tsuna versus Mukuro.

* Giotto's name can be translated as "gentle/peaceful ruler" in Italian. It is also the name of a famous Italian painter.
Once Daemon decided to give his inheritance, Giotto appears again in front of Daemon and thanks him for fulfilling his duty as a Guardian to which Daemon commented that he hasn't changed. After Daemon gave Chrome his inheritance, Giotto also gave Tsuna his inheritance as he had watched Tsuna and his Guardians throughout the Inheritance and impressed by their determination, deeming him and his Family worthy to carry out the legacy of Vongola. Later, he approaches Daemon and comments that Daemon still keeps the pocket watch that symbolizes their friendship and said that his feeling regarding that matter has yet to change, to which Daemon replied that he was forever a fool and that's why Giotto disappointed him in the end. After both parted ways, he and the other Guardians went back inside the Vongola Rings.

* In the most recent poll, Giotto ranked 12th in popularity and 6th in strength.

* In the Drama CD, Giotto mentioned that the name "Primo" was given to him by his Guardians. Demon revealed that the name shows their dedication that they will ensure the lasting of the Famiglia.

* Giotto becomes the final boss in every story mode of Katekyō Hitman Reborn! Kindan no Yami no Delta.
  +
* Giotto's voice actor, Daisuke Namikawa, also voiced ten-years-later Tsuna when he was briefly shown.
  +
* Giotto has many similarities to his descendant and tenth Vongola, Tsunayoshi Sawada:
  +
** Both are physically quite similar looking.
  +
**They are very kind and fight only to protect those they love, rather than power.
  +
**Both wear gloves as their main weapons.
  +
**They are both considered very kind by their Guardians.
  +
**They are very close to, and great friends with, the Simon family heads: Cozzato & Enma.
  +
**Both of their right hand men are their Storm Guardians; G for Giotto and Hayato Gokudera for Tsuna.
  +
**They are very loyal to their friends and do everything they can to protect them.
  +
**They are not considered suitable to be the bosses of the Vongola by their Mist Guardians, Demon Spade and Mukuro Rokudo respectively, due to being very kind.
  +
**However, both their Mist Guardians still maintain a certain respect for them; Demon Spade still keeps the watch Giotto gave him, showing that he still values their friendship, and Mukuro Rokudo developed a certain respect for Tsuna for caring for and protecting Chrome.
  +
** Their Guardians also have many similarities to each other, both physically and personality-wise.

When Tsuna had his back to the wall in his battle with Byakuran, Tsuna explained his motives for fighting and prepared to battle Byakuran again, although he was heavily out classed by Byakuran, something Byakuran was quick to point out. At this moment, responding to Tsuna's will, Giotto speaks, but doesn't show himself, through the Vongola Ring. Giotto speaks to his Guardians, asking them if they approved of what he was about to do. Each of his guardians approved, for exception of Daemon, with G. telling him to do what he wants, like he always does. Giotto agrees with G., and then appears in front of Tsuna through his Sky Vongola Ring. Giotto explains to Tsuna about the history of the Vongola Rings, and how their true powers were sealed to ensure a strict succession. However, now he believed that Tsuna would understand the true meaning of both the Vongola Rings and his will, so there's no need to seal them anymore. Upon saying this, Giotto releases seal on the Vongola Rings and reveal its true form. After doing this he encourages Tsuna to beat Byakuran by telling him to give the "Mare Boy" a scare before disappearing.

Guardians
G.
Giotto's Storm Guardian and childhood friend and trusted right-handman. Together, both of them created the vigilante group that would become the Vongola family. Through Giotto's trust in him and G.'s devotion to Giotto, their friendship has been shown to be very close, further evidenced by the fact that they were close friends since childhood. G. is fiercely loyal to Giotto and never once questioned his seemingly unreasonable actions, nor ever once regretted following him, always siding with Giotto's justice. He is the first one to stand up for him and the person to be the most agitated if anyone insults or endangers Giotto in any way, enough to reveal his short-tempered trait that can only be calmed down by Giotto. He is also the first one to realize if Giotto acts unlike himself and becomes concerned to the point of being somewhat paranoid, already thinking of the worst case scenario when it comes to his childhood friend's safety.

Ugetsu Asari
Giotto's Rain Guardian. Ugetsu was a swordsman who was renowned for his talent; however, rather than devoting himself to the sword, he opted to become a musician instead. However, when he was informed that Giotto was in danger, he, without hesitation, sold all of his instruments and bought his swords and travel fee to go to help Giotto, showing how close Ugetsu and Giotto are as friends, as Ugetsu's devotion allowed him to give up his music career to simply help out a friend, valuing their friendship more than his own dream. Like G., Ugetsu also easily becomes somewhat paranoid whenever they feel Giotto is not acting like himself.

Lampo
Giotto's Lightning Guardian. Lampo was the son of the Lord of the Land. He was extremely cowardly and spoiled, to the point where he wouldn't enter an important battle just because he didn't want to. However, whenever Giotto requested him to do something, he stated that he couldn't refuse him, showing a good relationship between them and Lampo's loyalty to Giotto.

Knuckle
Giotto's Sun Guardian. He was an undefeated boxing champion. However, due to his strength, he accidentally killed an opponent during a match, which made him resign from boxing and turn to religion to atone for his sin. At his Famiglia's moment of crisis, he gave himself 3 minutes and managed to save them, showing that he is loyal to both his Famiglia and Giotto.

Alaude
Giotto's Cloud Guardian. Being the Cloud Guardian, Alaude was aloof and separated himself from the other Guardians. However, it was stated that when he and Giotto shared the same goal, he would work flawlessly together with him to achieve the goal, showing more consideration for his comrades on the path to achieving the goal than during his usual meetings with them. Alaude would become fiercely loyal to Giotto and devoted, showing that despite normally being isolated, Alaude and Giotto have a good relationship during certain times. Like the other Guardians, Alaude carried around the pocket watch given to him by Giotto as a proof of friendship. Giotto entrusted Alaude with the position of External Advisor and as head of CEDEF, a position meant to keep an eye on the Vongola after Giotto himself retired. After Giotto sealed and divided the Vongola Rings he gave half of them to Alaude for safekeeping, showing that Giotto trusted him immensely.

Daemon Spade
Giotto's Mist Guardian. Both used to be close friends and at first, Daemon respected him as much as the other Guardians. Unfortunately, after Elena's death, Daemon misinterpreted Elena's dying wish for him to make the Vongola strong, prompting him to have an addiction to ensuring that the Vongola remained strong through cruelty, rather than kindness. Because of this, he thought that Giotto was unworthy of making the Vongola feared and powerful, causing their friendship to become strained and eventually forcing Giotto to step down through betrayal. However, after all that time, Daemon still kept his golden pocket watch of friendship given to him by Giotto before Elena's death, showing that he secretly still treasured his close friendship with Giotto, though he refused to admit it even to himself. Giotto is also shown to be forgiving of Daemon, still regarding him as his family member, as well as a close friend, as he still acknowledged Daemon as his Guardian despite his betrayal. The two in fact met, through Elena.

Familia & Allies
Tsunayoshi Sawada
Tsuna is one of Giotto's descendants. Giotto seems to hold Tsuna in high regard and has helped Tsuna out in multiple ways, including bestowing his inheritance upon him and unleashing the true form of the Vongola Rings to help him defeat Byakuran. He also refers to Tsuna as his "true successor."

Although Reborn mentioned that Tsuna's style of fighting, weapon of choice, and motives for fighting are all similar to Giotto, the first time that Tsuna came face to face with Giotto was during the Vongola Trial in which Giotto approved Tsuna as the next Vongola Boss and told Tsuna that the Vongola was his to either make prosper or destroy, showing that he placed his trust and faith on Tsuna. This was further displayed when Primo appeared during the fight with Byakuran when he restored the true power of the Vongola Rings, something no other Vongola Boss accomplished.

In turn, Tsuna trusts Giotto completely and has been shown standing up for him when other characters accuse Giotto of questionable actions. Tsuna has quite confidently stated that Giotto is not the kind of man that would betray his friends when Enma told Tsuna about Giotto's betrayal of the first Simon boss, Cozarto. As time goes by, Tsuna seems to become more and more like his ancestor, beginning to share his love for his friends, his determination to protect and bravery to fight. Tsuna's respect for Giotto goes to the point that he even understood that Giotto would never accept Tsuna as a successor if he were to let Reborn die, as someone that wasn't ready to risk his life for his comrades didn't deserve to be the Vongola boss, something that shocked Reborn.

Cozarto Simon
Giotto first heard about the Simons from his (Giotto's) grandfather. Giotto and Cozarto shared a close relationship, like brothers. Due to their strong bond, they agreed that Vongola and Simon should never cross swords with each other; in fact, it was Cozarto who first suggested that a vigilante group be formed, and that Giotto should lead it. This idea was the start of the Vongola Famiglia. Their friendship continued to the point where Cozarto decided to help his best friend in the massive mafia war between Vongola and the rival Famiglias once he received a letter that told him to assist the Vongola. Cozarto, knowing it was a fake, and guessing that there was a traitor within Giotto's subordinates, went to help.<br />Giotto also immediately intended to help Cozarto personally and showed concern and reluctance when Cozarto suggested to hide the truth about his Famiglia's survival, which meant that the Simon has to be living in the shadow and in return, he swore that the Vongola would support Simon. Cozarto agreed and he swore that the Simon would harbor no grudge against them, and their Famiglias would always be close for as long as they existed.

Appearances

Giotto, later voluntarily renamed Ieyasu Sawada, is the founder and first boss of the Vongola Famiglia, giving him the title of Vongola Primo. He is the progenitor of the Blood of Vongola, and the direct ancestor of Iemitsu Sawada and Tsunayoshi Sawada. He is also the creator of the Zero Point Breakthrough. Giotto's will and spirit currently resides in the Sky Vongola Ring, in the same way as the souls of the other seven Vongola Bosses who have already passed away.

Appearance[]

Giotto is a young man of average height with spiky blond hair and sharp orange eyes. With this, Giotto bears a resemblance to his descendant, Tsuna. He wears a black pinstripe suit, white undershirt, and black tie. His cloak is black with an upturned collar, red tassels, and cloak clasps with intricate designs. Giotto also wears his I-Gloves. In most of his appearances, he remains in Hyper Dying Will Mode.

Personality[]

A calm and collected leader, Giotto also has a strong sense of justice. He actively pursues what he believes is right for the people of his hometown. Despite Vongola rising to power more than it originally was, Giotto never let the power to get into his head. He was always prioritizing the safety of the weak people over ruling them, staying true to his conviction to the very end.

Giotto deeply cares for his friends and Famiglia and is willing to protect them from harm. He likes the safety and smiles of local citizens, Cozzato and his Family, while Giotto dislikes when the weak ones got hurt.[3] Very charismatic, Giotto is able to attract and welcome many kinds of people into his vigilante group. In addition to his charisma, Reborn once stated that Vongola Primo was the kind of person who accepted anyone into the Famiglia, regardless of background.

Equipment and abilities[]

Giotto was a very powerful fighter and known to be the strongest Vongola Boss throughout history.[1] He is the only known Vongola Boss to possess the ability to seal away one's Hyper Intuition.[citation needed] Giotto is normally seen in Hyper Dying Will Mode. He has fast reflexes and is able to utilize the Vongola Hyper Intuition to dodge a bullet.[citation needed]
